What to look for in New Zealand stock photography

PIXiPIC • 1 year ago

Authenticity, New Zealand-ness and relatability.

Stock photos tend to look like stock photos, except for when they don't. And they shouldn't. Stock photos should be as great and exciting as new iPhones on a shelf. But authenticity is hard to capture, because photoshoots for stock libraries are generally very staged. So I try to counter staging by speaking with my models about anything but the photoshoot while shooting.

And you can't have New Zealand-ness in stock photography unless you really shoot in New Zealand. Because New Zealand trees are different, the houses in New Zealand are different, even the way the waves break is totally different to Aus or Indo. And the light. Because of the hole in the ozone layer, the light in New Zealand is much less filtered, it is much brighter, more like a giant flash bulb which makes for an extremely bright and neutral white balance.

And New Zealanders are a smart bunch. They can most often tell if a stock photo is genuinely sourced in New Zealand, and will be quickly put off if it is over staged like is often the case in overseas stock photography. And if you don't have authenticity and New Zealand-ness, then you don't have relatability, and you risk alienating your brand's followers.

So as much as possible, choose real New Zealand stock photos if they are of quality and feel authentic. Heck they don't have to be from this website. I'd much rather there was more viable choice and selection of New Zealand stock photo libraries to New Zealand brands tell their story.
