What to look for in New Zealand stock photography
Authenticity, New Zealand-ness and relatability.
Stock photos tend to look like stock photos, except for when they don't. And they shouldn't. Stock photos should be as great and exciting as new iPhones on a shelf. But authenticity is hard to capture, because photoshoots for stock libraries are generally very staged. So I try to counter staging by speaking with my models about anything but the photoshoot while shooting.
And you can't have New Zealand-ness in stock photography unless you really shoot in New Zealand. Because New Zealand trees are different, the houses in New Zealand are different, even the way the waves break is totally different to Aus or Indo. And the light. Because of the hole in the ozone layer, the light in New Zealand is much less filtered, it is much brighter, more like a giant flash bulb which makes for an extremely bright and neutral white balance.
